Deep Desolation / Primal / Iugulatus: Split

15/12/11  ||  The Duff

This is my first attempt at a Stub, the endearingly-bite size-focused review section named after staffer Smalley’s penis pre-op. Now we simply call it Nub. I’m digging this three-band split a fair bit; this is black metal of the old days, not that we don’t have enough bands producing such, but me, I’m into far more shall we say thought-provoking black metal so when I want Burzum, Darkthrone and early Enslaved I go to the source. Oh, and guess what, I pick up hints of early Dimmu Borgir. Yup, got to admire that considering they’ve been shunned despite their classic efforts “For All Tid” and “Stormblåst”.

So anyways, it appears we go through an evolution of sorts as the demo progresses, and honestly I’m enjoying the more primordial variety of Primal than I am the slightly-eerie, more dynamic approach (and ‘epic’) of Deep Desolation which reminds me of a primitive Borgia. That said, this is a Stub review, and I’m sure the latter would grow on me a lot more given time while the former would dwindle into sweet-fuck-all; Primal = Burzum, Negura Bunget, Dimmu Borgir and Enslaved, Iugulatus = black/thrash, hints of more epic varieties, like Darkthrone with spit-shined shoes, and Deep Desolation probably the more engaging of the three with a more contemporary approach in the progressive BM vein.

6/10 Stub-splits (another nickname for Smalley’s newfound cock) that are surprisingly a lot better than average.
